  • We’ll need your permission to carry out an electronic check with the Dept. of Work & Pensions that you satisfy the State Benefits LPG boiler grants qualifying criteria.
  • The surveyor will require proof that you either own or privately rent your home. This will mean a copy of the deeds or mortgage statement, or if you are a tenant, a copy of your tenancy agreement.
  • If you rent your home, we will need your landlord’s consent to install a new LPG boiler. If you can let us have contact details for your landlord, the installer will do the rest.

Important information about the Oil Boiler Grants Scheme

We’ve been involved with the ECO Scheme since it started early in 2013 and since then we’ve helped over 20,000 householders with their ECO Grants.

The calculation for LPG Boiler Grants is based on many factors relating to your home. But essentially the greater you reduce your carbon emissions by having a modern, energy efficient LPG boiler installed, the higher your LPG boiler grant will be.

The value of your LPG boiler grant is compared to the cost of installing a new LPG boiler and if it is sufficient, you will receive a free LPG boiler. However, if your LPG boiler grant is not high enough, you may be asked for a contribution in order for the installation to go ahead.

LPG Boiler Grants FAQs

What is the Government's ECO Scheme?

The Government’s ECO Scheme was introduced with two aims in mind: to cut heating bills for low income householders and to reduce carbon emissions from inefficient domestic heating systems.

ECO attempts to achieve this by replacing old, faulty and inefficient LPG boilers with new, modern, energy efficient LPG boilers. ECO started in 2013 by offering boiler grants and is currently due to end in September 2018 although the Government is considering whether to extend it.

The part of ECO which provides LPG boiler grants to qualifying households is called the Affordable Warmth Scheme. The Government may decide to introduce a new ECO Scheme and if they do, the part which will fund LPG boiler grants is expected to be called the Help To Heat Scheme. Qualifying criteria for LPG boiler grants is expected to change at the same time, so if you qualify today, you may not qualify after September 2018.

Which State Benefits or Tax Credits do I need to receive to qualify for an LPG Boiler Grant?

To qualify for LPG Boiler Grants you need to receive one of the following State Benefits or Tax Credits:
  • Guaranteed Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit *
  • Working Tax Credit*
  • Universal Credit *
  • Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support

Those benefits marked with an * are subject to maximum household income thresholds based on the number of adults and children who live in your home.

It is estimated that there are over 1 million pensioners who qualify for Pension Credit but who don’t receive it because they have never applied. If you think that you may be entitled to Guaranteed Pension Credit, you can find more information at https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility

Where does the money come from to fund LPG Boiler Grants?

The Energy Companies Obligation ‘obligated’ the major energy companies to provide funding for the following measures:

  • Replacement Electric Storage Heaters
  • Replacement Central Heating Boilers
  • Installation of Cavity Wall Insulation
  • Installation of Loft Installation

They achieve this by placing a levy on the electricity bill of every domestic property in the UK. The money collected is diverted into an ECO Fund and it is used to provide ECO Grants to low income households.

In addition to LPG Boiler Grants we can help to arrange Oil Boiler Grants and Storage Heater Grants.

How are LPG Boiler Grants calculated?

The calculation of the value of LPG Boiler Grants depends on the following factors:

  • What type of property you live in, house bungalow or flat
  • How large your home is
  • How many bedrooms your home has
  • Whether it has cavity walls or solid walls
  • How many external walls it has
  • How well your home is insulated

The ECO Scheme uses these factors to estimate how much you would cut carbon emissions from your home by making it more energy efficient. The greater the reduction in your home’s carbon footprint, the greater your LPG boiler grant will be.

Is everyone who receives State Benefits entitled to a Free LPG Boiler?

Unfortunately not.

You must meet the strict qualifying criteria for LPG Boiler Grants which can be found on the Qualifying Criteria page. The only difference of course is in respect of your existing LPG boiler. If it is rated C or below for energy efficiency it just needs to be faulty. If however it is an A or B rated boiler it must be faulty AND cost more to repair than to replace.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, please complete the LPG boiler grant application form and we’ll call you back to advise you.

You must meet ALL 3 parts of the LPG boiler grant qualifying criteria to be entitled to an ECO Grant. These are in respect of:

  • Your Home
  • Your State Benefits
  • Your Existing LPG Boiler

Even then your LPG boiler grant may be insufficient to pay for a completely free LPG boiler to be installed and you may be asked contribute to the cost.

If you choose not to contribute, your LPG boiler grant application will cancelled and there will be no charge.

I don't have a LPG boiler, can I still have one installed with an LPG Boiler Grant?

Unfortunately not.

The LPG Boiler Grants Scheme is strictly a ‘Like for Like Replacement Scheme’.

This means that you must have an LPG boiler installed in your home at the time of your Free ECO Survey. If you do qualify for an LPG boiler grant your ECO Accredited Installer must be able to remove your old LPG boiler before they can install a new one.

Which types of LPG Boilers are installed under the ECO Scheme?

Only the most advanced condensing LPG boilers can be installed using an LPG boiler grant.

Our ECO Accredited Installers use mainly Worcester LPG boilers and Vaillant LPG boilers.

Are other heating system grants available under the ECO Scheme?

ECO Scheme Grants are also available to replace faulty Oil Boilers and faulty Electric Storage Heaters.

To qualify you will need to receive certain State Benefits or Tax Credits just like the LPG Boiler Grants Scheme.

And remember, the ECO Scheme only offers grants on a ‘Like for Like’ basis. To qualify for LPG boiler grants you must have a faulty LPG boiler installed in your home which can be replaced.

I am a landlord, can I apply for an LPG Boiler Grant for my rental property?

For the purposes of the ECO Scheme the person living in the property with the faulty LPG boiler is the applicant but with your tenant’s permission you can apply on their behalf.

Your tenant will need to receive one of the qualifying State Benefits or Tax Credits AND have a faulty LPG boiler installed in the property at the time of the Free ECO Survey.

Will it cost me anything?

The initial survey is free of charge but the amount of the ECO Grant is determined by the property type, how large it is and how well insulated it is. ECO LPG Boiler Grants may not cover the full cost of replacing the faulty LPG boiler so your tenant may not qualify for a completely free LPG boiler.

Generally speaking, the smaller the property the higher the likelihood there will be a contribution required. However, a more energy efficient LPG boiler will help you to satisfy the new Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards for rental properties which come into force in April 2018.

If I qualify for an LPG Boiler Grant, what type of boiler will you install?

The ECO LPG Boiler Grants Scheme offers grants to install boilers on a ‘like for like’ basis.

This means that the new boiler must use the same fuel as your old one, you couldn’t have an LPG boiler removed and an oil boiler installed for example.

Also, your new boiler will operate in the same way as your old one. So if you have a combi boiler, your new one will also be a combi and if you have a system boiler, your new one will also be a system boiler.

If I qualify for an LPG Boiler Grant, what make of boiler will you install?

Most of our ECO Accredited Installation Companies install either Vaillant LPG boilers or Worcester LPG boilers.

LPG Boiler Grants - Worcester Bosch LPG Boilers

LPG Boiler Grants - Vaillant LPG Boilers

Part of the Bosch Group, Worcester is a British based company which has been manufacturing central heating boilers for over 50 years.

Worcester boilers carry the Royal Warrant, are consistently the Which? Best Buy for residential boilers and every Worcester Greenstar boiler comes with a manufacturer’s 5 Year Warranty.

Most of the applicants for LPG Boiler Grants would prefer Worcester Greenstar boilers if they could choose.

When will the LPG Boiler Grants Scheme end?

The current version of the ECO Scheme, known as ECO2t, is due to finish in September 2018.

However, the Government is using the period until then to hold a consultation and decide what will happen after that. Current thinking is the the scheme will continue in a different form for a further 4 years. However, there is no guarantee.

The proposals are to call it the Help to Heat Scheme with a greater focus on tackling fuel poverty – where households spend a disproportionate amount of their income trying to keep their homes warm.

If qualifying rules change, some householders who qualify for LPG Boiler Grants under current rules, may not in future. It is therefore important to apply for an LPG Boiler Grant now, whilst ECO Funding is available.
